Subject: Mixing Old and New Token-Ring Source Routing
Date: September 11, 1990

GENERAL
INFORMATION: Here is some pertinent information on updating to the new
Token-Ring drivers:
The problem is that the old source routing drivers would
not see a packet without an RI field in it. The new
drivers, in order to save time and energy, check the
destination and if the destination is on the same ring,
they do not put in an RI field. Therefore, any nodes
(file servers, bridges, workstations etc.) with old
source routing drivers installed will not see the packets.
So the file servers will not update their routing tables,
workstations will not connect, etc. If there is a bridge
between the old and new drivers, then everything is okay.
So if the rings are all separated by IBM's bridges, then
they can update one ring at a time and be fine as long as
every single node on the ring is updated at the same time.
If the rings are separated by our routers, then the
process is more difficult, since neither NETGEN or BRGEN
will let you mix old and new drivers. So for this
situation the customer will need our nonoptimizing
routers. These are available in the private area of
NetWire named TEMPRT.ZIP.
